Speech Pathology

When to seek Speech Pathology services

Early detection of communication problems is essential to each child’s development, well-being and self-esteem. Children who experience a delay in onset of talking often have difficult to detect middle ear problems, causing hearing loss. Delays in play skills can also impact the child's development of social language skills. Children with language delays frequently go on to have literacy problems if the underlying language difficulties are not remedied.

At Skillbuilders we see children who have difficulty with:

  • Speaking at a developmental level that is right for their age
  • Making their speech clear and understandable
  • Understanding others who speak to them
  • Expressing themselves with age appropriate vocabulary and grammar
  • Engaging in conversations
  • Understanding the relationship between sounds and letters
  • Sequencing sounds and letters for reading, spelling and writing
  • Using an appropriate voice

Speech Pathology Services Include:

  • Detailed assessment and therapy services for developmental communication, voice and literacy problems
  • Individualised programmes delivered in one to one therapy sessions
  • Practical supportive advice for parents and carers involved in the therapy process
  • Collaboration with, and referral to, other relevant professionals involved or required in the child’s care, eg: teacher, childcare provider, allied health professionals, GP and medical specialist

Sarah Coates

Sarah has over 17 years experience as a Speech Pathologist in Perth and the UK. She has worked in the Child Development Service in Perth, and in community clinics, primary schools, and language development centres for the National Health Service in the UK. Sarah’s interest is in working with young children and their families to provide support in the years before school and early school age. She works with children who have speech sound disorders, language disorders, stuttering, and literacy difficulties. She has a particular interest in working with parents/caregivers and children through parent-child interaction therapy, using video to help parents and caregivers clearly see how they are supporting the child so that they can become increasingly confident about what works for them, what to focus on, and how to help others in knowing what to do. Sarah is always on the hunt for new games and toys to add to her collection to ensure sessions are full of fun.
